Unitriangular groups
The unitriangular group UT(n,𝔽q) is the group of upper-triangular
n × n matrices over 𝔽q with 1s on the diagonal.
- Order —
|UT(n,𝔽q)| = qn(n−1)/2, one field entry per position above the diagonal. - Sylow subgroup — for
q = pᵈ,UT(n,𝔽q)is a Sylowp-subgroup ofGL(n,𝔽q): it carries the fullp-part of the order formula. - Nilpotent of class
n − 1— the lower central seriesγ_kconsists of the matrices supported from thek-th superdiagonal outward, and the upper central series climbs the same ladder in reverse. The center is the corner: matrices differing fromIonly in the(1, n)entry, isomorphic to(𝔽q, +). - Universal for
p-groups — every finite p-group embeds inUT(n,𝔽p)for somen(embed inGL(m,𝔽p)by the regular representation, then move into a Sylowp-subgroup).
Small cases
UT(2,𝔽q)≅(𝔽q, +), elementary abelian.UT(3,𝔽q)is the Heisenberg groupH(3,𝔽q)— the two families name the same group atn = 3, and only there. Forq = 2it is the dihedral groupD₄of order 8; for an odd primeq, the extraspecial group of exponentq.UT(4,𝔽2)— order 64, class 3.
Part of the wider family of matrix groups: the unipotent part of the Borel subgroup of GL.
